2. Micro-etching with lasers for bonding

  • Practical tip: Aim the laser at the narrowest part of the frenulum for precise cutting, and move the laser in a continuous motion to avoid excessive heat buildup in the tissue. Perform a gentle stretch of the upper lip afterward to ensure the tissue’s mobility.

4. Precise gingival troughing for impressions

  • Why it matters: Getting a perfect impression for veneers is essential for the fit and aesthetic appearance. Gingival troughing with a laser can be used instead of retraction cords to provide better visibility and cleaner margins during impression-taking.
  • Technique explanation: Use the laser to remove minimal amounts of gingival tissue around the margins of the prepared teeth to create a well-defined trough. The procedure leaves a blood-free environment ideal for digital or physical impressions. Troughing with lasers is particularly useful for patients with inflamed or sensitive gums, where traditional methods could cause more discomfort or bleeding.
  • Practical tip: A diode laser is ideal for soft tissue troughing. Ensure that the laser is set to a low power setting to avoid excessive tissue removal, and always move the laser in short, controlled passes. Make sure the gingival tissue is fully retracted before taking the final impression.

5. Laser-assisted osseous reduction

  • Why it matters: In some cases, especially when significant gum recession or bone overgrowth is present, the bone may need to be reshaped for the veneers to sit properly. Traditional osseous surgery can be invasive, but lasers allow for minimally invasive bone reshaping. Laser-assisted osseous reduction can also be used to reshape or reduce bone tissue in preparation for dental implants.
  • Technique explanation: An erbium laser allows for controlled bone removal with less thermal damage than traditional drills. The laser ablation of bone also doesn’t require the intense water cooling needed in mechanical bone cutting.
