FAQs

What types of retainers are available?

Avant supplies a wide range of custom-made fixed and removable retainers to fit any and every patient needs. However, some common types of retainers include:

Hawley retainer: A thin, acrylic base is moulded to fit the roof of the mouth or the lingual surface of the lower teeth. A stainless steel wire framework is attached to the base and wraps around the teeth to hold them in place.

Essix retainer: A transparent plastic material such as polypropylene is custom-designed to fit precisely over the patient’s teeth. While they are less noticeable than Hawley retainers, Essix retainers may be more prone to wear and tear.

Fixed or bonded lingual retainers: A thin wire is bonded to the back surfaces of the teeth with dental cement to provide long-term retention. Fixed retainers are typically not visible from the front.

How long do retainers last?

The lifespan of retainers typically depends on the type of retainer. Removable retainers – like a Hawley or Essix retainer – are more likely to be damaged or lost by the patient.

Fixed retainers, on the other hand, are designed for long-term use and can last for many years.

What are the benefits of retainers?

Retainers are predominately used to maintain teeth alignment, prevent post-orthodontic relapse, and improve bite and jaw stability.

Removable retainers typically make it easier for the patient to maintain good oral hygiene, and can be removed for eating and playing sport. They can also be easily replaced if broken or lost.

Fixed retainers overcome the challenge of poor patient compliance. They also provide constant and continuous force to keep the teeth in their corrected positions.
