FAQs

Can A Porcelain Fused To Metal Crown Be Repaired?

Our lab can repair chipped porcelain, please provide new impressions.

What are Porcelain Fused to Metal Restorations?

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) restorations are permanent dental prosthetics that are constructed with a metal substructure and a layer of porcelain on the external surface. They are commonly used to restore damaged or missing teeth in both the anterior and posterior regions of the mouth.

How are Porcelain Fused to Metal Restorations made?

The metal substructure used in porcelain fused to metal restorations is made to match the shape of the tooth being restored. It provides strength, stability, and support to the restoration.

The substructure may be made from either a high noble metal alloy, a noble metal alloy or a non-precious metal alloy. High noble metal alloys contain precious metals such as gold; noble metal alloys contain a combination of precious and non-precious metals; and non-precious metal alloys are made from non-precious metals like cobalt-chromium.

The metal substructure is then covered with carefully shaped layers of porcelain to give the restoration a natural tooth-like appearance. It is custom shaded to match the patient’s surrounding teeth to achieve a seamless restoration.

What are the benefits of Porcelain Fused to Metal Restorations?

Strength and durability: The metal substructure provides the strength required to withstand biting and chewing forces for posterior restorations that come under greater functional demands.

Aesthetics: The porcelain veneer ensures the metal substructure is not visible to achieve a more natural appearance. The porcelain veneer can also be shade-matched to the patient’s surrounding teeth.

Versatility: Porcelain fused to metal crown and porcelain fused to metal bridge restorations can be used where strength is a critical consideration.

How long do Porcelain Fused to Metal Restorations last?

Porcelain fused to metal restorations can typically last 15+ years. However, the health and integrity of the underlying tooth structure can impact longevity of porcelain fused to metal restorations. Decay, recurrent cavities and gum disease can compromise the stability of the restoration, so it’s important for patients to maintain proper oral hygiene practices.

Occlusal forces such as excessive or abnormal biting and chewing can also impact the longevity of porcelain fused to metal restorations, and bruxism-related stress can cause fractures.

The porcelain layer can chipping or wear over time, however Avant can repair chipped porcelain.
